|Custom drum maker Johnny Craviotto recently visited the east-coast set of the popular and critically-acclaimed HBO television series, "The Sopranos", to present the show's creator and executive producer, David Chase, with a special creation of his own: a 5.5x12" solid-maple snare drum. Finished in a bright red, transparent lacquer, the one-of-a-kind "Sopranos Soprano" piccolo snare drum was handcrafted and signed by the legendary drumsmith and bears an engraved badge with the words "Custom made for David Chase, creator of The Sopranos, by Johnny Craviotto".
"I'm a huge fan of The Sopranos," explains Craviotto. "I once read that in addition to being responsible for the show David is also a drummer so I wanted to make him this very special drum not only to honor him, but also to draw attention to the fact that drumming can be a positive part of anyone's life. And what better drum for the creator of the Sopranos than a soprano?"
As a drummer and drum maker, Johnny Craviotto has been refining the age-old art of solid-shell drum construction for several decades; during which he has built a reputation as the reigning authority on the tradition. Over the past twenty years he has created steam-bent drum shells from a variety of Maple, Birch, Oak, Walnut, Cherry and other exotic woods as well as the only solid-shell drums made from 700 year-old Maple and Birch reclaimed from the bottom of Lake Superior. Craviotto drums remain among the most prestigious instruments of their kind and are used by many of the world's leading drum artists.
Although David Chase initially intended to become a professional rock-and-roll drummer his other passions included Saturday matinees and making up stories. After taking a filmmaking course at the School of Visual Arts in New York he hung up his sticks, bought a Super-8 camera and eventually went on to study in the graduate film program at Stanford University. In addition to his award-winning work on "The Soprano's", David was also instrumental in the success of such new standard-setting series as "I'll Fly Away", "Northern Exposure" and "The Rockford Files". A writer, director and producer on "The Sopranos", David has received an Emmy, as well DGA and Golden Laurel Awards--while the series has been repeatedly recognized by multiple awards and nominations from the Emmy's, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild. The Sopranos has also been acquired as part of the permanent film and media collection at the Museum of Modern Art.
