At AES Munich 2002 Tannoy showes a new generation of time-aligned, three-way active studio monitors featuring Tannoy Wideband Technology, providing accurate reference nearfield monitoring across the 40Hz-50kHz frequency range. The loudspeakers are aimed at music, broadcast and post-production facilities as well as AV and mobile recording applications.

Graham Hendry, engineering director for professional products at Tannoy explains, "Research has shown that we detect and respond to ultrasonic frequencies in our perception of sound, even though we may not hear them. These ultrasonic additions to fundamental frequencies affect the entire audible frequency range, so it s obvious that engineers need to be aware of them in order to create realistic sound reproduction. Tannoy Wideband Technology has enabled us to add a sophisticated SuperTweeter, time-aligned to the acoustic centre of the Dual Concentric driver, to accurately reproduce frequencies above the roll-off point of the DualConcentric HF unit. The result is a nearfield reference monitor of outstanding quality and accuracy."
Tannoy's Ellipse 8 is the only loudspeaker on the market to feature a sub-sonic signal indicator. The multi-function LED display on the front panel will flash yellow to indicate the presence of unwanted subsonic signals (typically between 1Hz-15Hz), which can affect recording quality if undetected.
The Ellipse 8 is powered by discrete MOSFET amplifiers with low noise and distortion, while analogue signal processing achieves a flat frequency response in use. A wide sweet spot for practical working across the console is provided thanks to Ellipse 8's 90° horizontal dispersion characteristics.
The elliptical cabinet shape is constructed of laminated birch with MDF baffle and rear panel. The cabinet is supplied with a detachable neoprene base to dampen unwanted vibration and an optional wall bracket is available.
