Miss South Africa Teen 2001 contestants recently paraded across the stage and catwalks under a rig dominated by High End Systems automated luminaires. The July 14th pageant was held at Carnival City in South Africa and broadcast live on South African Broadcasting Corporation's (SABC) Channel 1.
SABC LD André Rossouw specified 93 moving lights, 250 Par cans, 50 5Kw fresnels and 12 5Kw scrollers, all supplied by Upstage Lighting in South Africa.
The list of High End Systems automated luminaires included:
12 Cyberlight
3 Cyberlight Turbos
34 Studio Color 575s
12 Studio Spot 575s
8 Technobeams
12 Intellabeam
Status Cue console.
Rossouw, who works fulltime at SABC designing television production lighting, says he specifies the Studio Color quite frequently. "I personally think the Studio Color is the best unit ever designed and built. It is absolutely great for television work and very versatile. The light intensity is great on the S-versions."
He says he mainly uses High End fixtures not only because of their availability in South Africa, but also because of the way that the fixtures can work for long hours without having technical problems. "It is very rare that a fixture needs to be repaired after it has been set up. I have worked on a number of major productions using other types of well known fixtures, but the amount of fixtures that had to be pulled down and repaired during rehearsal times was not what one would have expected from them. I must mention that the other fixtures did have some very good plus points as well. I just find that the High End fixtures are very robust and can take a lot of hammering during travel and setup times."
As an example, SABC still owns a few Intellabeams that were purchased a few years ago that are "still going strong," he notes. "The maintenance on them was minimal. On all our projects we mainly use only High End products when available."
