At PLASA 2003 High End Systems introduced ColorMerge, a dichroic color mixing system that fits any standard-sized ETC Source Four ellipsoidal fixture, at a cost comparable to a color-mixing scroller aimed at entertainment and information markets including theatre, television, film, concert touring, night clubs, churches and corporate events planners.
Positioned as an alternative to gel scrollers, ColorMerge uses dichroic borosilicate glass as its color media. ColorMerge allows the user to mix any color needed and to do live fades from one color to any other smoothly, silently and cleanly. ColorMerge attaches between the lamp house and the lens of a standard size Source Four, including the Source Four CE and the Source Four HID. It doesn't interfere with the gate area so you can still use patterns, irises, gobo changers and all the usual Source Four accessories. ColorMerge attaches and detaches from the Source Four in about two minutes with no modifications needed on the Source Four.
ColorMerge is controlled using three channels of standard DMX; one each for Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. Combinations of these allows any desired color to be mixed. For the best operation, High End recommends using a desk which gives the option of LTP operation (latest takes precedence) for these channels and ensuring that they are not affected by the Master or Grand Master faders.
Says HES Chief Technology Officer Mike Wood, "The ETC Source Four is the market-leading ellipsoidal fixture and it cried out for a good dichroic color mixing system. ColorMerge, along with our recently-introduced ColorCommand color-mixing PAR/washlight, now make up the first two offerings in our line of Dichroic Theatre products."
