SoundStation, the company that specialises in sound post production equipment dry hire for film and TV productions, has invested in another five Fostex DV40 digital recorders. Twickenham-based SoundStation now has 15 Fostex DV40s in their hire stock. A number of the new recorders are destined for New Zealand, where the new movie The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a classic children¹s adventure from The Chronicles of Narnia, is being shot. The film, which stars James MacAvoy, Dawn French and Tilda Swinton, is due for release in 2005. The DV40s will be used for the magless dailies system in conjunction with both film and HD projection.
Sound Production Mixer and SoundStation director, Chris Munro, has been in the forefront of digital audio film production. Munro notched up a first with Fostex PD6, in his recent project, the blockbuster Van Helsing being the first film to be recorded on PD6. Chris has just finished recording 'Sahara' also recorded on PD6. He says: "Van Helsing is the first film to be recorded entirely on the Fostex PD6 with DV40s used for replay in the magless dailies process. This system has revolutionised audio for film."
"In the past, doing the daily rushes meant that the entire day's recording had to be digitised in real-time, which obviously took hours, before it could be used by the editor. Now the whole days work can be imported in about six minutes, a tremendous saving in time. The is added bonus is the valuable metadata stored along side the audio for all the file information such as slate and take numbers, track identification etcetera. This greatly reduces the mundane housekeeping chores normally required of the editorial crew"
The SoundStation dealership have supplied a number of PD6 and DV40 machines for film and TV productions and have just delivered a second PD6 with the internal HD upgrade to sound production mixer David Crozier. He will be using this for the latest Harry Potter film - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, scheduled for release in early 2005. The latest Batman film 'Intimidation Game' is also being recorded on Fostex PD6 as is 'The Lion, the Which and The Wardrobe'.
