Anyone out there play a McGill Super Ace? I'm about to make a decision to have a new nylon string guitar built for me and I am having trouble deciding between Paul McGill and Kirk Sand.

I've played both. Paul's guitars are true classical and steel string guitars with wonderful tone. Muriel Anderson plays his guitar in concert. The Super Ace is a great guitar.

Kirk's guitars are nice too but not nearly as usable unplugged. There are a lot of nice used Sand guitars out there.

I had my Super delivered about 6 weeks ago. I got it with the idea of playing plugged in (it is great for that), but it actually has a better balance across the strings than my high end Esteve classical and good volume when played unplugged.

Paul is good to work with, I actually picked out the peices of wood used for body (coc bola) and neck (quilted mahogany). He shaped the neck for me so that it is slightly narrow at the nut but normal string spacing at the sound hole. I ordered it that way for Jazz (movealbe chords, no open strings type of stuff) and it is perfect. Kirk Sands never answered my calls or E-mails, so I cannot comment on his guitars. I love the concept of his Jose F guitar but I don't know if he is actually making it.

I'm a scientist, not a professional musician so I may not be the best opinion. But, I've played classical for more that 30 yrs and owned more than 20 guitars. Only downside is that Paul is in demand, my guitar took almost 2 yrs from order to delivery so check the schedule with him. For me, it was worth the wait. I am going to have him make a steel string version of the Super for me; just waiting for that next bonus check.

I have been playing classical for about 5 years, and have owned several high-end nylon instruments, as well as some outstanding flattops. I recently acquired one of Paul's Picasso guitars. Would definitely rate it among the best sounding nylong guitars I've owned or played. I also recently had the opportunity to play a Super Ace, and it's everything that I could want in this style of guitar. Each of his guitar's that I've heard or played is wonderfully resonant, even across all ranges and have outstanding separation. While they may be designed and used primarily for jazz, the quality of the sound would work superbly for classical, as well. Finally, I would have to place Paul's workmanship among the top 5 luthier's I've ever seen. A Super Ace is now on order. Good luck with your decision.

Sorry, I took so long to get back here. Thank you all for your comments. I have decided to go with the McGill Super Ace. I have a very good friend who uses it, almost exclusively, in the studio. I have heard nothing but good reviews of his work. I have also heard nothing but "2 years wait"...whyich is fine with me. I have plenty of other instruments to perform live, and record, with in the meantime. I intend for Pauls' guitar to be my last nylon purchase. Again, thanks!

I think Price made a great decision. Paul made a classical w/foldaway for me in 1999. I still love it everytime I pick it up. Great action, great sound, and as Kevin noted wonderful luthiery - a joy to play and look at.

I am considering getting a Super Ace made by Paul (inspired by sound of Peter White smooth jazz). I have met with Kirk Sand several times in Laguna Beach and I am impressed with his craftsmanship as well--he makes a Super Ace type guitar. The problem is the two-year wait with either of them.

I would like to find a good used Sand or McGill Super Ace type guitar. I have checked ebay and google but haven't had any luck. Any ideas where I could find one?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
